Methodist pastor (1836–1906) known as the ‘Singing Chaplain,’ who taught soldiers ‘The Battle Hymn of the Republic’ to lift morale; he once performed it for President Lincoln at the White House, and sung at the memorial service after Lincoln’s assassination.
